Ibn Battuta

Arab traveler (1304-1377) who journeyed extensively throughout the Islamic world, Asia Minor and the Crimea (qq.v.). His Travels, composed in 1355, is exceedingly useful for social and economic conditions in early 14th-century Asia Minor (q.v.). For example, he confirms that there were still considerable numbers of Christians in western Asia Minor. In Laodikeia (q.v.) he saw Greek textile workers still at work, and women wearing turbans. In Constantinople (q.v.) he had a personal audience with Andronikos III (q.v.) in late 1331.
